Sicily, Italy, 2018
A beautiful wine made from the rare Nerello Mascalese varietal. This grape is grown on the slopes of Mount Etna, and volcanic soil found here encourages some of the best conditions for growing grapes. Sicily is well known for producing the robust, dark Nero d’Avola and Nerello Mascalese is an interesting contrast to this reputation. Light in hue, medium to light body with notes of red cherry, almond, and anise, with bright, high acid and delicate tannins. This wine can be drunk slightly chilled by itself but also pairs well with a wide range of foods, from charcuterie and cheese, to richer meat forward dishes.
